Unplugging - Journal Entry for March 29th, 2015 Sunday

Blue sky of Spring after the rain.
Sometimes its good to turn off all of your devices (like computers and mobile phones and TV).  Just be unreachable for a few hours maybe even a whole day.
I find taking the time to notice the blue of the sky and the white of the clouds is very relaxing.  These moments of quiet reflection give me the time to find the many blessings I do have in my life right here and now.
Taking time to ground yourself in the beauty of nature allows for peaceful and grateful ideas to come to the surface of your mind.
What are you thankful for?  I ask myself this question in the morning and before I go to bed every day - sometimes during the day if it is especially stressful.  Allowing yourself to feel thankful is the first step to true happiness.
A big part of finding joy from within me is to be the best I can be at work and at home.  Finding out what it is I do well and pursuing that endeavor brings me a sense of accomplishment and success that I feel from within myself.
At work I understand reprocessing and how computers aid in patient safety.
At home I've found achievement by attending book signings where people come together to get a glimpse of their favorite authors and a signature on their latest books.
Beyond that brief meet and greet and signature there's the satisfaction of finding like minded people.  As we meet in line we share favorite books and authors.  In some cases we share lunch or visiting historical sites in the area or go shopping.  Its like finding a safe place to play with friends like a really well adjusted school yard during exercise time.  I've found Facebook friends too.
When the book signing event is by the author's home town or state you also get the unique experience of seeing some of the area that inspired the author to create the stories you loved to read.  I found the landscape and historic sites I traveled to influenced me to keep on returning along with the beautiful people I met along the way.
In between my book signing trips I have been exploring the world of social media for supporting authors, books, TV and Movies with book reviews and tweets (140 character blog posts).  I also use my blog here to share my personal journey as I embark on my years after the 50 years old mile marker.
One of my most rewarding TV show assisting with tweets has been with Hallmark Channel and helping to spread the word that this channel gives options of entertainment the whole family is able to watch together and tweeting is positive with these fans too.
When I tweet I like to find what is good and true about the story that made it to creating a TV Show or movie.  I enjoy giving the actors and actresses and crew credit when they all work together to bring a screen play to life.
I've worked behind the scenes on plays and seen all the work that goes into hitting the right mark - not just in relation to the right place to stand in the scene but to get the right emotion and lines the same way for every take.  It takes many rehearsals to get the final scene just that way it needs to be so that every time the audience sees that performance its always true to the script.
Not all of us are called to be actors, writers or producers.  Some of us are the fans and supporters of what is true and lovely about the stories that move us to tweet or post that which makes us happy or sad and why.
I believe we all make difference no matter what job we hold.  All of us impact one another with a smile or a gesture.  I choose to make my impact on others positive and full of hope.  If you work hard and believe in yourself moving mountains is not so difficult.
I find strength in times of calm when I'm able to see the light within me that is my mission in life to expose to others.  If we all uncover our illumination there will be no darkness at all.
Keep on believing in the possibilities.  As long as I do, I uncover beauty all around me every day.

Peace,

Missy

March 22, 2015 - A Journey of Discovery

Geranium patiently waiting for the healing sun of Spring and Summer.
I'm discovering healing is a journey.  Slowly I'm learning to give up habits that are holding me back from reaching my full potential.  In all things I'm learning to seek the truth.  Finding inner calm is the key to unlocking what's real in any situation.
How do I find calm?  First, I have to own how I feel.  Where is my mind taking me?  For example, do I see people working against me or for me?  Do I see all situations as related to me or do I see that all are working to find answers for the questions within their own life?
Teamwork is all about having common goals everyone want to see come to fruition.  If all parties have buy in that the outcome is worthwhile then people are able to put self aside and work toward the common good.
For me, as I begin to see the common goal, I've been able to see the potential in others and within myself.  My actions are going toward positive outcomes aligning to put me in a position where I may both meet my needs and the needs of the organization where I work.  I'm to discovering educational opportunities that tie into my personal and professional aspirations.  I'm beginning to truly listen to myself and others.
I am finding answers I need all around me, in quick conversations in the hallway or break room, posts on Twitter and Facebook.  All leading to success from within just by being open to the possibilities of good outcomes.
My hope, in chronicling my journey through life, is that others will find answers they are seeking too.  My greatest gift to me is to follow my dreams.  Know that to seek is to find.  In all things, always keep seeking the answers to why am I here, what's my purpose?  What's uniquely me and pursue that end goal for a lifetime.

Peace,

Melissa Blanchard - Missy.
Always seek the light of understanding.

Focus on the Positive March 8, 2015

The hope of Spring as told by my Geranium.

A few weeks ago I noticed that there were more leaves coming in on my Geranium and they were getting darker green and then just last weekend I saw one bud blooming.  Now, even though we had snow and cold, there are 4 blossoms and 2 new sprouts where buds may form all from the increased sunlight.

I find this process magical and instills in me that with Spring comes new beginnings, not just in the world around me but from within me.  As I continue to keep up with my daily gratitude journal I feel as though I'm able to really understand the world around me much better.

For the first time in many years, maybe all the way back to 4 or 5 years old, I see the world as a safe place to grow.  I'm seeing how I may be of help in situations at home and at work.  Finding the good within myself I'm now much more able to discover the good in others.

I know there are still questions I don't have answers for and maybe never will but I am still able to find the truth in others and situations.

The first break through for me came when I identified what is my purpose for being.  Professionally, I seek to make computers effective tools to improve health care for the patient. Personally, I look for ways to uplift those doing actions that help lighten the burdens of others.

In my personal life I strive to find ways to help.  Sometimes its with a positive tweet or post or blog for topics as varied as politics, books, TV based on books and TV designed to help people find answers to difficult dramas in everyday life.

Somehow each of us must strive to find a way to discover their purpose - what makes you unique?  Maybe you can build cabinets and chairs out of wood.  Or you might be able to see something beautiful in a sunset and take a picture.  Perhaps you are able to advocate for others that have no way to get their message out.

Whatever it is that makes you unique - that's your calling.  That's the thing that you do no matter how discouraged you may be, you keep striving to succeed.  The main thing to remember, the road isn't easy.  The path to understanding brings about hard times.  It takes work and dedication to put together just one scene on a TV show.  Life is something like that, only we don't get a script to follow and we don't know the next scene but we have to do all we can to find the truth in every situation.

Reaching out in an honest way will help you find your way.  Find someone you admire and make them your mentor.  Whatever you commit to you must first believe in your heart that what you're pursuing is what fulfills you.  Ask yourself what do you need to succeed, what do you need to grow and flourish and set out finding ways to achieve this goal.  When you truly find what motivates you, you will find the job, the training, the tools, and the strength to make your mark in life.  While you're striving to meet your goal to finding your purpose stay positive.  Sincerely be thankful everyday, this is like the water, soil and fertilizer for my Geranium (Sunlight is the purpose).  You have to find the goodness in what's around you now in order to fully appreciate who you are deep down inside.

Just like my Geranium, keep seeking the light, sometimes you may not find it right away, but some day it will come - so be prepared to make the most of the sunshine while you're able.

Remember everyone needs the sun and to me a smile brings light to my world.  The best way to get a smile is to give one. Take time to be thankful and live in the moment every minute so you're able to make the most of the sunlight that comes your way.

Sincerely,

Missy

Blog Entry February 7th 2015

Hi All,
Here's hoping all is going well with those that are reading this blog. I'm writing from Minneapolis Minnesota, the weather is around 36 degrees Fahrenheit no wind and clear sky.  Below are some pictures from my walk today.

I enjoyed the walk and hearing the birds singing.  I even saw a squirrel sitting up high in a tree.

Be sure to get out and move this weekend if you're able.  If the weather doesn't permit - try deep cleaning a room - it helps to move at least 30 minutes every day.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Peace,

Missy

Blog entry January 11, 2015

2015 is a good year to make some changes that are lasting. I have found that no matter how dedicated you can be about eating the right things it's one of the most difficult addictions to kick.

Memories associated with certain foods or TV ads that push certain foods that trigger remembrances are the hardest to resist.

It's very easy to fool myself into believing I can have something even though I don't need it just because it doesn't bother me but I've realized in some instances, I can have low-grade reactions. Even the very idea that I'm eating something beyond what I need puts weight on my body - weight that is rooted in fat not muscle.

In my case both in 2013 and 2014 the holidays meant having sugar. In 2013 I weighed enough that it didn't really matter because I stayed at about the same weight because I hadn't lost that much but in 2014 I gained weight because I had lost enough. Now I have to look at myself in the mirror and know that I need to change 365 days a year.

Having fellowship and having memories of family and good times is not a reason to eat. I can have relationships I can have a social life but I need to be clear on what I need to eat to digest properly.

I don't have the resiliency of a 20-year-old anymore and whether or not I like it, it's true as I age my digestion has changed and I must change my eating habits accordingly.

It's been a hard lesson for me to learn but luckily I can still fit into the new clothes I bought and the new shoes.

We all have a job to do and for me its to stay as healthy as possible to be a good citizen and I also have learned the best way to do this is through moving my body, cleaning, eating right, and working as hard as I can on each thing I need to do.

Managing my asthma symptoms is another big thing I've been tackling in 2014. So far I have learned that there's a different way of managing triggered asthma versus constant asthma. Triggered asthma doesn't need long acting medicine but more short-term types. Also, controlling sinus symptoms is key to not having flare ups. One of my biggest triggers is dry air so I've been humidifying my apartment helps much to stop symptoms. Knowing the triggers and avoiding them as much as possible is better than any medication.

Along with proper diet and controlling my asthma I've discovered sustainable exercise is best when completed daily for at least 30 minutes. I have been able to ride my bike on a fly wheel that simulates the road and walking through my apartment building to replace outside activity whenever weather keeps me indoors.

I found that I do best when instead of being discouraged when I fail, I rededicate myself to those things worth doing. Eating food because it sustains my body in the best way possible instead of as a comfort or reward works best for me. I have to keep food as a means of fueling the body not as a means of satisfying me emotionally.

I hope you find a solution to staying healthy happy that works for you.

Keep on working on being the best person you can be when doing all the activities you need to do in a day. I pray to be the best driver I can be when I drive, the best worker I can be when working, and the best eater I can be when eating. It works for all the things I do in the course of a day.

I've been discovering other ways of getting enjoyment besides finding it in types of food and drink. There's ways to stay busy. I ask myself - what needs doing right now to be a good citizen and I find many things that need doing.

I'm hopeful to find the strength and courage to follow my dreams in 2015 even more so than I was able to in 2013 and 2014. Everyone has set backs I've discovered I want to succeed.

Good night and peace to all.

Healthly Lifestyle Notes Along my Journey To Wellness - July 6, 2014

Why be healthy?  I've heard this question from others along my journey and have found the best reason I know of is to have a feeling of being in sync with mind, body, soul, spirit and universe.  When the body is in a rhythm the rest fall in line.  The spirit leads the way on getting a body on schedule.

I started out with a simple routine of eating within an hour of waking then 4 to 5 hours after that until 3 meals are consumed.  This easy guide got me started on the path to routine.  I discovered the body needs to have routine - exercise, fuel intake, and sleep.  When these 3 are regulated the rest will follow.

What rest am I talking about?  Organizing, cleaning and socializing.  As we meet the basic needs of the body, the mind is free to pursue other interests.  To prepare the fuel, organization and cleaning at least in the kitchen, follows.  From there the areas that we use each day to get going and stay clean, laundry and bathroom.  Now I'm up to clearing away clutter and keeping the floors clean on a regular as you go type approach.  I even got the vacuum cleaner involved - used to just do this on a "cleaning" day - well those don't really come easily to me so now every day is a cleaning day.  The cleaning has become part of my routine.  Next step will be to add areas I don't utilize all the time - coffee tables, side tables, storage bins, file cabinets and computer tables. Once this is in a clutter free state and I've weeded out all the unnecessary paperwork, I'll get rid of extra in my car trunk.  That isn't too bad but needs a good clutter removing exercise.

I've discovered that the body works with the mind when it's needs are satisfied and the best way to accomplish this is with regular, good fuel and exercise.  Getting the exercise done in the morning has also been key to overall cooperation of the body to get what needs doing done throughout the day.  Sitting, standing, walking and doing is easier if the walk workout is completed first thing.  This allows for better sleep patterns as well.  The main reason is now I chose a waking time that is consistent with my schedule during the work week - out for my walk no later than 5:30 a.m. so I can have meal one completed before the work day begins.  This allows me to have more time to do things for my personal living space and life goals on the weekends and holidays.  Also saves on setting alarms - always set for same time everyday - routine makes for easier getting up as well which allows for a more even temperament throughout the day.  Also, it's true, you can't make up sleep.  The body needs its rest time everyday, you can't short it 5 days a week then expect it will be able to heal itself on the weekend by sleeping 10 or 12 hours Friday and Saturday.

This schedule also builds discipline that is self motivated.  I know that if I get my walk done within an hour of getting up I feel better because I can have my meal one on time.  The body rewards by being available the rest of the day for my other activities, social media, social events in my community, house work, food preparation, paying bills and pursing work and personal goals.

I used to think I wanted to be free of constraints on weekends - sleep as late as I wanted, sit all day if I wanted to.  But I realized this isn't what my body needed.  My body needs a routine, habits that build a stronger body, mind and spirit through regular nurturing.  When you love yourself deeply and completely you will discover how important it is that your physical and psychological needs are met.  Only then can you work on the needs of the many or the universe.  In so doing I'm now fully awake in the present moment.  I see what needs doing and get it done with no added stress.

Yes, I said, with no added stress.  I was under much more pressure before because subconsciously I knew that getting off routine on weekends was damaging but couldn't see that getting up earlier was the cure.  Not doing what needs doing creates stress whether you allow yourself to realize it or not.  That pile of dishes is weighing on you whether you are able to see it or not.  It's taking valuable reasoning power to justify not doing them.  Why not do them?  Same with eliminating dust, clutter, dirty body and laundry.  When you take care of these things they are no longer taking up valuable hard drive space on the computer of the mind, so get them done.

My Changing Look On my Journey to Wellness

I know, last July, 2013 I weighed at least 240 pounds for a 5' 1" frame.  I couldn't get from the chair to the kitchen sink without effort that taxed.  In 2012, I was going door to door to help get out the vote and nearly passed out after going just a short distance and steps were impossible.  This extra weight was slowing me down, using up my mental and physical resources just to get the basics done to keep working. The light didn't come on about the weight until I couldn't easily fit in an airline seat.  So while on that same trip I found the book, "It Starts With Food" at Turn The Page Bookstore Cafe.  I suggest you read this book - you can do that easily - its well written and easy to understand.  It walks you through the 1st steps to getting well.  It took me until February to lose enough weight to start exercises about 40 pounds or so.  I had to start slow - shoot for 30 minutes easy walking - fit it in where you maybe now watching TV, then later you see the value of morning routines that are sustainable by being set early enough to accommodate working hours.

Remember this is a gradual change - the body doesn't gain or shed weight in a hurry unless you're ill.  You need to maintain about a pound a week and remember water weight comes off fast and as your increase muscle mass you will weigh more - fat weighs less than muscles does.  I first noticed by measuring myself like I was going to sew an outfit, bust, waist, mid-waist, hips, bicep, and calf.  Just remember if you are like me, you'll have fat that hangs down, like the waist and upper arm.  The arm you can measure, but the stomach hang is trickier to measure.  I gage it by how much of my thighs I can see.  I noticed there's an indent on my thighs from where the stomach rested, I can see that the stomach has receded (after losing nearly 60 pounds) - much like a glacier, the fat has melted away.  Take note of these things in the mirror, get a hand mirror to check out your butt and back.  You have to stay motivated - scale and measurement will let you down but seeing less fat will not - you will know you've made progress if you detail how you look today.  It's your body, embrace it, know it, and work with it.

Not just your body will be changing, your mind, soul and spirit will be changing too.  Be sure to capture this journey in journals during alone times.  This is the time your spirit will talk with you and the universe to give you direction and help you see the direction you need to take both personally and professionally.  Keep appointments with yourself for bill paying, journal writing and socializing.  As you complete the journal writing you will find other goals you want to pursue, like traveling, learning, reading, and writing.  Make appointments for these too and follow through, you matter, your hopes and dreams matter, be true to them.

Its so easy to slip, the main thing is don't fall back into the bad habits.  Keep your focus on what's doable, execute and remember your checklists and appointments with yourself are even more important than those at work.  As you take care of your basic needs, you'll be able to start work on your To Be list.  Your mind will have the resources to begin finding out what is it you want to be, to yourself, to the world and to the boss.  Remember, what you are is as important as what you do.  Be the best you can be.

Your comments are welcome.  If you need someone to run ideas by you can reach me at mblanchdev1@gmail.com.  Sometimes you just need to have someone listen to your ideas.  I've also found that talking into a recorder helps me work through my thoughts easier than writing at times.  Its a great way to sound off.  The mind and body want to work for the good of the soul and spirit so learn what's good for you, apply it and good health will follow.
